Adult Swim's Top New Show of This Year Gets a Major Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
In October of last year, the late-night programming block saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the channel introduced a completely new animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. At a time often characterized by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
In mid-December, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three respectful teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.
"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."
A President's Endorsement
The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and supported its distinctly quirky appeal.
"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about watching this lovable family navigate their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to help comedy break out of its current cynical streak. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.
“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
Future Seasons
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially help usher in that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to bask in the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
