Throughout his first term, commentators often suggested that Donald Trump's remarks should be interpreted earnestly instead of word for word. Yet, real-world experience indicate that this approach could have reversed the logic.

An emergent American strategic document alongside multiple statements from administration officials, presidential allies, and the former president have precipitated what could be one of the most severe challenges for transatlantic unity, the security framework that has sustained stability and freedom in Europe since 1945.

From Burden-Sharing to Cultural Anxiety

Colored by racism and a deep-seated contempt for Europe's governing bodies and elected leaders, he has spoken about the risk of societal collapse on a continent he has rarely visited and mostly viewed from a distance.

It constitutes an unabashedly racist theory, with Trump and his circle explicitly endorsing far-right political parties across Europe.

While the broader theme of this race-baiting is not new, its specific implications for European security are critically important.

In the view of the president and his Maga acolytes—including billionaire Elon Musk, who recently advocated for the dissolution of the EU—all statecraft is fundamentally a deal. However, while he once claimed was about burden-sharing, the current assertion is that a declining Europe is undeserving because of its shift toward diversity.

Weakening from Within

During the conversation, Trump joins these ideas in a kind of rhetorical loop. He acknowledges that Russia's Vladimir Putin wants a divided Europe. Trump proclaims Europe to be weak, and by publicly highlighting the rifts in Washington and European capitals, he inadvertently aids Putin by further weakening European unity—while simultaneously claiming it's not his "fault".

All of this is playing out at perhaps the most consequential moment for Europe in decades, amid a brutal conflict in Ukraine and escalating provocations across the continent.

While Europe cleaves ever tighter to Kyiv facing continuing warnings of U.S. withdrawal, the danger is that Trump has rationalized a rationale for ignoring his allies.

The European Response

This situation demands a firm response from European leadership. Although certain leaders, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, have been forceful in their rebuttals, others—like the office of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer—have opted for a policy of seeking to placate the U.S. administration.

On Tuesday, the UK government declined to criticize the president's remarks about Europe or his latest criticism on London Mayor Sadiq Khan.

They said, "He enjoys a productive partnership with the U.S. president and a good working relationship with the London mayor, and is committed to working with both to achieve better outcomes for the people."

The stark reality is that the president intends what he says and repeats them consistently. It is past time to stop pretending that things are different.
