Israeli citizens mark two-year remembrance of 7 October incident as Gaza peace talks continue
People have come together throughout the country to mark the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated attack on 7 October 2023, as discussions proceeded in Egypt over an end to the war in the Gaza Strip.
The incident saw over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others captured back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single most fatal day for Jews since the Holocaust.
Israel answered by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its figures are seen as trustworthy by the UN and other world agencies.
"Our violent adversaries have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister added on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the release of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the assurance that Gaza will no longer present a danger to Israel".
Commemorative Ceremonies Across Israel
The national leadership rescheduled official commemorations until mid-October - after the completion of the religious holiday season - but events still took place throughout the country on that day.
A memorial ceremony for the relatives of Israelis who lost their lives in the Hamas assault was organized in the coastal city. Organized by the families themselves, it was aired across Israeli broadcast stations.
A period earlier, a silent tribute was observed throughout the country.
Negotiation Discussions in Egypt
Simultaneously, the conflicting parties' delegations gathered in the Egyptian coastal city of the Egyptian city for a second day of third-party negotiations to discuss the conditions of the agreement.
A high-ranking delegate involved in the negotiations indicated that an evening round of mediated discussions started at 19:00 Cairo time.
The representative said the morning session finished without tangible results, because of differences over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas seeks to ensure Israel does not recommence hostilities after the first phase of the arrangement.
He added that the negotiations are "tough and have yet to achieve any significant progress," but mentioned that intermediaries are striving to reduce the differences between the two sides.
Critical Issues in Discussions
- An enduring halt to fighting
- The swap of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The removal of military personnel from Gaza
- Plans for humanitarian aid provision
- After-conflict administration of the area
Citizen Reaction
In the city's Hostages Square previously, young a woman - whose family member lived through the assault on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were lost their lives and numerous more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - explained: "Nowhere appears as home anymore and until each abducted person come back no one will be secure."
"After we see everybody home returned, we can feel relief anew. Then we can commence heal," she added.
Outside the prime minister's home in Jerusalem, people congregated to express their support for the loved ones of the hostages. Israel states 48 stay in confinement in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are thought to be alive.
Demonstrator one woman remarked: "It's necessary do any agreement required for the abducted to come back home. But we truly desire guarantees that we will be secure."
Opinion polls now regularly indicate that approximately the majority of the population desire the hostilities to finish in return for the release of the abducted.
Palestinian Circumstances
At the area of Nova festival, those paying respects came together to honor the dead.
From that location, the boom of military attacks and explosions could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses said the heavy Israeli shelling continued.
In Gaza City, bombardments were documented in the morning of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, area and zone neighbourhoods and in the east side neighbourhood of the community, as well the settlement to the north-west.
"When the night arrives, the fear comes with it," relocated urban resident a local woman, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli bombing earlier, shared.
"My family are terrified of the attacks. All the night we are sleeping together, clinging, especially my little child who puts his head on me all night."
"Every second we look at the news to see developments. And I'm afraid that this halt will not be finalized and that the conflict will resume to us."
Health Situation
The medical facility in the urban area announced it had accepted the corpses of half dozen people by the afternoon, including a trio who lost their lives in an Israeli strike in the south part area.
A different healthcare center in the southern urban center of the city said additional fatalities had been transported. An individual was died by Israeli forces while seeking aid to the southern area, medical staff reported.
