The remains of a mother aged 34 and her young daughter, 10 have been found inside freezers in an residence in the western part of Austria.

The deceased, a woman from Syria and her daughter, who had been unaccounted for for a number of months, were uncovered on the end of last week. The cooling units were placed behind a drywall partition in the apartment, situated in the city of Innsbruck.

Two individuals, a 55-year-old Austrian and his brother aged 53, were taken into custody in the month of June. The elder brother, a colleague of the Syrian woman, stated to police last week that there had been an unfortunate event—but disputed murder.

Addressing journalists previously, a official for the legal authorities stated the two suspects were being detained on "high likelihood of intentional killing".

The names of those involved have been withheld by authorities, in compliance with local legislation.

The family's disappearance was originally brought to light by the woman's cousin, who lives in Germany, on 25 July 2024.

Authorities stated the male associate told them at the time she had gone on an long journey with her daughter to see her family in the nation of Turkey.

The mother's debit card was then discovered to be utilized overseas on multiple occasions.

However when officers examined the woman's home, her mobile phone was located.

Someone also claimed listening to a disturbing sound in the dwelling, and shouts of "mama" on the date the pair were believed to have vanished.

An expanded official inquiry was launched, with investigators discovering several texts originating from the woman's phone—among them a resignation letter to her workplace and communications to the male colleague.

Law enforcement stated a amount in the thousands was also sent to the suspect.

Katja Tersch informed media representatives on Tuesday that a storage unit had been secured before the vanishing and a freezer had been installed within.

The two suspects removed the cooling unit from the facility on the day the woman and her child went missing, Tersch stated. And a week later, they obtained another freezer.

Investigators state they think this suggests the deaths were premeditated.

"The reason for their demise could not be determined due to the condition of the bodies," Tersch said.

The prosecutor's spokesman—representing the state—said the specific order of occurrences is still unclear, but the victims were carefully placed and were not found during a prior examination.

Although the suspects were arrested in the summer, it was only on 12 November that the suspect confessed to an event and to hiding the bodies. He disputes any intent to kill, authorities said.

In a related development, his 53-year-old sibling confessed to a cover-up but denied involvement in a murder.

The brothers are presently in custody awaiting trial in jails in separate locations, situated at a distance.

In a joint statement, Austria's Minister for Women and the top legal representative stated the "alleged double murder... symbolizes the abrupt and violent termination of a mother and child and reveals a heartless setup".

"Females of all ages are being killed due to the simple reality that they are of the female gender," they continued.

"Murders of women are a deeply rooted and widespread concern that we must fight resolutely."
