A minimum of 16 individuals perished and over 40 sustained injuries when attackers opened fire at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities have labeled a act of terrorism.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She told the moments before the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister declared that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement read.

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still under care, with five in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who attended the scene.
