Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer behind a series of unforgettable images worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.

Price was best known for his architectural shapes and performative fashion, including the light-hued ensembles that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."

Price's death comes less than a month after he presented his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price designed for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in designing form-fitting garments made him a "true original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he commenced designing outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as several ensembles for her American tour after assuming the title.

With a vocation that covered over fifty years, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London last month in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Theatrical Flair: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

Design circles says farewell to a authentic original whose legacy on style and culture remains indelibly etched.
