The former Liverpool manager says coming back to coach Liverpool is plausible in theory.
Jurgen Klopp, who departed from Anfield in 2024, has suggested that a future comeback remains something that could happen. Klopp, following a hugely successful near-decade reign which brought continental glory and ending the club's long wait since 1990, now holds roles as head of global soccer within the Red Bull organization and in an advisory capacity to Germany's league body.
Supporters’ Hopes and His Frank Comments
Liverpool won the Premier League last season, but many fans holding him in high esteem would be thrilled by the notion of his potential comeback. In a wide-ranging interview, he shared with his interviewer: “I declared I will never coach any other side within the country. So that means should it be the Reds...yes. It's plausible.”
“I’m 58, so I might decide in a few years, who knows. Must I choose now? In that case, I'd stay away. But thank God, I don’t have to do that. I'll simply watch how things unfold.”
Conditions for a Comeback
Pressed on the specific conditions would have to unfold to tempt his return to the touchline, Klopp admitted he isn't eager to such a return. “I don’t even know exactly, I love what I do right now,” he said. “I don't crave being a coach; I don’t miss standing during downpours for lengthy sessions; I don’t miss going to interviews multiple times weekly or doing numerous chats a week.
“I don’t miss the dressing room per se, however, dining out with the team having a nice chat, is pleasant. Success was frequent meaning regularly great spirits in the building. I still have Virgil [Van Dijk’s] laugh vividly recalled for example.”
Praise for His Successor
He spoke highly of the current boss, crediting him for the adjustments which secured the championship last campaign. They've been defeated four in a row in all competitions post heavy investment, yet he dismissed the suggestion of it representing a slump.
“[Liverpool have] a top-class attacker like Florian Wirtz, you will all eat your words if you use the wrong words. A remarkable prospect. Ekitike, excellent performer. It’s a really good thoughtfully assembled roster. No need for concern regarding the Reds, they will be fine.”
Emotional Tribute for the Late Forward
The manager expressed deep feeling on the loss of Jota, a 2020 acquisition while in charge, along with the consequences for the team. The Portugal international was killed in a vehicle collision with his brother in July.
“Can you substitute such an individual? It goes beyond the player himself, it’s the guy he was. It's hard to picture the team environment without him in it. Putting it into words is tough about it. It was an incredible shock for his teammates also. Not a single person would cite it for poor performances but it is the situation. Being in that space where his spirit remains. Dealing with that on a personal level is not easy. Overwhelming.”
