Three-time award winner Nikola Jokic suffers a 'gut-wrenching' injury to his knee.
Triple NBA Most Valuable Player Jokic endured a "heartbreaking" knee injury as the Denver Nuggets fell 147-123 at the Miami Heat.
The Serbian center was hurt late in the first half following an accidental contact with team-mate Spencer Jones.
The other player landed on the footwear of Jokic, and he immediately collapsed to the court clutching his knee.
The 30-year-old, that is leading the NBA season in rebounds and dimes, recorded 21 points and eight assists in the game before suffering the setback.
Jokic is scheduled for an scan on Tuesday to assess the severity of the injury.
"Instantly, he understood he was hurt," commented Nuggets head coach David Adelman.
"This happens in professional sports. Any player that is injured, it's gut-wrenching, particularly somebody as important as he is. We'll find out more on Tuesday."
"The team will adjust together. Clearly, at this moment, I'm focused primarily about Jokic as a person and the letdown of going through an event like that."
