The distinctive yellow-fronted apartment block in the background helped us locate the footage.
Our team is analyzing images and video circulated this morning that show the aftermath of a reported car bomb blast that Russian officials state killed a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he succumbed to his injuries. A probe is currently ongoing.
The initial step to verify the location of where the pictures originated was based on posts saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital.
We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the unique yellow hue of a adjacent apartment building captured in the footage.
Locating additional structures, streetlights and the street layout confirmed the exact location the pictures were taken.
We also checked that the videos were recent and that the visuals had not been digital alteration.
